SELF EXPRESSION IN THE SOCIAL MEDIA ERA

Images + Words by Alexandra Callen

I find more often then not, people say “social media sucks”. What we don’t hear is how it can be an impactful platform for an artist, brand, business or even personal use.

Social media has opened the door to connect with people all over the world. We no longer have to be in another country to make a new friendship, we can be right here at home and create a connection in another part of the world. I mean, that’s pretty cool right?

Not only that, but as I expressed myself on social media it opened up so many doors. I have had the opportunity to sell my art, collaborate with new people on art pieces, paint my first mural for an air bnb and speak at an event. All of these things would have never happened if I didn’t share on social media and express myself.

If we look at social media as an art form or like a journal, it can open us up to sharing more about ourselves and our lives. When we share who we are, it allows others to connect with us. Through this connection we are able to find others who are like us, create new friendships, enjoy what we share and even support our journey.

The platform you use to express yourself can become a safe space for you and your community. It can allow others to connect to you through your content. It can open up conversation, awaken people to thinking differently and allow others to feel less alone in their journey through life. Even sharing our life stories can really impact someone else in our community letting them know they are not alone and can relate to our experience. Who we are and our content then becomes a ripple effect into the world.

This is where I will say, “Don’t be afraid to be you!”. Social media can teach us that individuality is a gift. It allows us to express the unique parts of our lives which inspires others to feel more comfortable to do the same.

Think of your Instagram feed like a book cover. When someone looks at it, it can make them feel a certain way but when they get to your stories it is similar to opening up the book and reading the first few pages. You can share more intimate and personal moments in your story which is where a lot of new connections can be made or be a conversation starter.

I truly believe vulnerability is strength, and when we have the strength to share parts of our lives that aren’t always perfect or things we like to do and enjoy, it can open us up to new connections within our community. It can even create a community for you online that supports you just the way you are.
